Over 10× reduction in logical error rates with Meridian

Hi everyone,

Last month we were absolutely thrilled to share our new results from Meridian, our purpose-built AI system for fault-tolerant quantum computing design!

We wanted to test Meridian to see how it stacks up against existing methods and general-purpose AI.

Across more than 100 fault-tolerance design tasks, Meridian achieved a median reduction of over 10× in logical error rates compared with the best-performing circuits from five leading published algorithms. It also outperformed a general-purpose AI agent, with a median reduction of over 40%.

These results focus on a critical part of quantum computer architecture: the circuits that detect errors in protected quantum information. Our evaluation spans 10 quantum error correction (QEC) code families, varied hardware layouts and error models representing the major quantum computing platforms.

Meridian’s specialized AI scientists combine frontier models, human-curated knowledge and validation tools from Plaquette, QC Design’s quantum design-automation platform. Plaquette tests candidate designs under realistic hardware imperfections, helping Meridian distinguish genuine improvements from designs that score well for the wrong reasons.

For quantum hardware teams, this means being able to explore more design possibilities and evaluate which ones work best for their hardware, which is very exciting for us! You can read more about it here.

Until next month,

The QC Design team

Hi everyone, Welcome to the July email. This was a big month for us! Our paper Plaquette: A hardware-aware design platform for fault-tolerant quantum computers came out on the arXiv recently. You can read it here. The paper was accompanied by techncial webinar by QC Design co-founder and Scientific Advisor, Prof. Martin Plenio. You can watch the replay here: We hope you enjoy! Hi everyone, Welcome to the June email. This month we have two new blog posts to share. Fault Tolerance Across Quantum Hardware Platforms How Plaquette models the hardware-specific physics that dominates fault tolerance across platforms including superconducting qubits, neutral atoms, trapped ions, spin qubits, and photonics. Do you really need 10000 physical qubits? People often say it takes ten thousand physical qubits to make one logical qubit. That number is only a rough guide. The real...

Hi everyone, We have several new things to share this month. We launched Gauge, a Python package that computes the optimal error threshold for any quantum error correcting code and noise model by mapping the decoding problem to a statistical mechanical spin model. You can read about the product here. Our new blog post explains the different kinds of errors that can happen inside a quantum computer: Not all errors are equal. Also QC Design’s CEO Ish Dhand was recently on the Blonde and Quantum...
